It has enhanced stylus pen support, but it could be a little faster. With its 2-in-1 design and enhanced stylus pen support, the HP Chromebook x360 (14b-ca0010nr) is an affordable laptop designed for browsing the web, handling email and Google Docs, and not much else. A newer trend in Chromebooks is convertible 2-in-1 Chromebooks that can be turned into tablets.

Despite its low listing price, the HP Chromebook x360 (14b-ca0010nr) isn’t the most budget-friendly Chromebook we’ve reviewed here, but it’s a solid addition to the affordable laptop market.

As with most HP products, the Chromebook X360 14b features a metal chassis and a 360-degree hinge. A sturdy base and soft plastic bezels give this Chromebook a premium feel. Altogether, the HP 14b-ca0010nr is well-made, looking and feeling good.

Design

In addition to the specs sheet, HP was also very particular about key details like the chassis and hinges of the Chromebook X360 14b. Despite being primarily plastic, the Chromebook feels very sturdy, even when held in one hand. The aluminum keyboard deck makes it feel very solid, even when sat down. It weighs only 3.5 pounds, making it easy to carry.

The port selection is good. HP keeps to its past by offering a single USB-A port, but by adding two USB-C ports, HP is staying on top of the current trend. It comes with a charger that connects to one of the USB-C ports, so you might want to purchase a USB-C hub to add more connectivity options if you plan to plug in many peripherals.

Input Devices: Keyboard, Trackpad & Pen

A low-cost Chromebook’s keyboard is usually awful – it feels like typing on hard rock. However, the HP 14b-ca0010nr stands out, with firm and gentle feedback that you can type for hours. The trackpad is centered on the spacebar below the keyboard.

With its smooth, predictable, and highly responsive feel, this trackpad is a far better alternative to HP’s trackpads, which sometimes went berserk or lost palm rejection.

You’ll need to buy the pen separately, though, since the HP Chromebook x360 (14b-ca0010nr) supports pen input. It has a magnet along the left edge of the keyboard deck that keeps the pen on its place. If you need a pen for interacting with the touchscreen, you can buy the HP Rechargeable Active Pen.

HP Chromebook X360 14b Performance

A budget Chromebook X360’s internals keeps it in the budget category. Its Intel Celeron N4000 processor, 4 GB RAM, and 32 GB eMMC storage give it adequate performance rather than blazing performance. These specs are good for the Chrome ecosystem, so we cannot complain about them.

If you’re streaming videos or playing online games, you’ll definitely notice more of a strain if you’re juggling between multiple web apps or 15 to 20 browser tabs open.

Since Google updates Chrome OS every six weeks, performance isn’t always comparable to older models. Despite its wide viewing angle, the HP 14b-ca0010nr has a high-quality HD camera. It’s also possible to play casual games like Super Mario Run, though some glitches can occur.
