Amazon Top Selling Acer Chromebook 317 17.3” FHD Intel Celeron N4500

Acer Chromebook 317 is the first Chrome OS laptop with a 17.3-inch screen. It may not seem surprising considering Chromebooks have been around for a decade, but this is the first Chrome OS laptop with a 17.3-inch screen.

Although it is an economy model with an Intel Celeron CPU and eMMC flash storage instead of solid-state storage, the 317 makes a good alternative to an inexpensive all-in-one PC if you want to watch big-screen videos or need a movable, albeit not overly portable, browser kiosk and homework station for the family room.

That’s a lot of Plastic

A dual-core Celeron N4500 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of eMMC storage, four USB 3.2 ports, a microSD card slot, and Wi-Fi 6 equip the Chromebook 317. There is no touch screen on this non-touchscreen, but it offers a full HD (1,920 by 1,080-pixel) resolution. Don’t expect luxury features like a fingerprint reader or backlit keyboard.

In terms of size and weight, the Acer Chromebook measures 0.89 by 15.8 by 10.5 inches and weighs 5.18 pounds, but is trimmer than some low-cost Windows laptops like the Dell Inspiron 17 3000 (0.98 by 16.4 by 11 inches, 6.2 pounds). There’s a fair amount of flex on the keyboard deck and screen corners, which are clad in grayish plastic called Sparkly Silver.

Taking Care of Business

Despite the fact that it captures relatively well-lit and colorful images with a great deal of static and noise, the webcam is a generic laptop component. When you maximize the Camera or Duo apps, your images look sharp, but very fuzzy in a smaller window. As a result, the speakers bracketing the keyboard don’t get very loud at all. It’s tinny and flat, with no bass (drumbeats sound like static), and you can barely hear tracks overlapping.

It has a shallow, tappy typing feel, but I’m glad there are real Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down keys above the numeric keypad. It is a tiny touchpad that glides and taps smoothly with a muted click. It is more convenient than having to pair the menu and Alt keys with the cursor arrows as is required on most Chromebooks.

Performance Testing: A Chromebook Variety Pack

With a Celeron CPU, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of flash storage, Chromebooks perform reasonably well, even if they lack Windows 10’s style. However, it isn’t intended to do much more than browse the web, check email, and use Google Docs. It didn’t seem to mind opening a few browser tabs, but multiple video windows or Android games did.

Your Only Choice Is a Pretty Good Choice

When you want a 17-inch Chromebook, there aren’t any competitors. You have only one choice if you want it. In the Acer Chromebook 317 model number, the “3” is as important as the “17,” which indicates you’re buying a modestly equipped, entry-level system rather than one of the faster, fancier machines in the Chromebook 500 or 700 series. Despite not being a stunner, the Chromebook 317 should satisfy many consumers, even though it’s not a stunner.
